PECA – Pakistani European Christian Alliance

PECA is a Dutch organisation who helps the persecuted Pakistani Christians in Pakistan and Europe.

PECA works among Pakistani Christians in and outside of Pakistan who are in serious danger because of their religious belief. PECA works hard to improve the situation of Pakistani Christians and provides accommodation for those who needed flee.

You can find the mission of PECA in Galatians 6:2 “Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” And in Hebrews 13:2: “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

PECA is established in 2009 by Sylvester Bhatti after he was confronted with the needs of the persecuted Pakistani Christians. Sri Lanka proved to be a safe place for Pakistani Christians, but the government of Sri Lanka did not do anything for them, so these refugees were left on the street. From that time on, PECA tries to help the Pakistani Christians who are in danger or bad circumstances.

PECA is an organisation which is registered in the Netherlands but operates internationally. PECA bases their mission and way of working on the Bible. The vision of PECA can be summarized in th ‘TULIP-confession’ of the Calvinism, worked out below.

Total Depravity: “there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.” (Romans 3:11)

Unconditional Election: Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: not by works but by him who calls.” (Romans 9:11-12)

Limited Atonement: “I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.” (John 17:9)

Irresistible Grace: “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions, it is by grace you have been saved.“ (Ephesians 2: 4-5)
Perseverance of the Saints: being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6)

Pakistan is a big country in South-Asia, with almost 200 million inhabitants, from which 97% Muslim and 1.3% Christian is. By the influences of Taliban, Alqaida and ISIS has the vulnerability Of the Christians increases a lot. Besides that, the government also made some discriminating laws. For example according to the blasphemy law you deserve the death penalty when you only say something which is against the Islam, the Koran or Mohammed. Because of this a lot of innocent people became victims over the last 20 years.

PECA works among the persecuted Christians from Pakistan in different ways:

Shelter in Sri Lanka

PECA provides a shelter in Sri Lank for Christians who fled out of Pakistan. PECA has three houses in Sri Lanka where approximately 150 Christians are helped, besides that PECA also supports approximately 50 Christians who have a house themselves. The goal is to take care of these Christians until they get the refugee status in Sri Lanka and they will be resettled by the UNHCR. PECA helps these Christians by providing in their basic needs, by providing medical care, by providing help with the asylum procedure and by encouraging them in their faith.

Shelter in Pakistan

In Pakistan PECA provides a temporary shelter for those people who are not save in their own environment. For example for people who are threatened by others or for people who were send back to Pakistan out of Sri Lanka.

Stone factories in Pakistan

In the stone factories in Pakistan a lot of Christians are working, because of a loan they once got from the boss of the factory. Because of the loan, the people were forced to work in the stone factories. When they work in the factory they get a small salary of €45,- per month, which is not enough for them to pay back the loan. So the loan only becomes bigger due to the interest. So these people are bonded to slavery for the rest of their lives. For their children is no money to send them to school, so they also only have a future of working in the stone factory. PECA wants to help these people by giving them a new opportunity. By paying back the loan some people can be ransomed, but most loans are too high for PECA to pay back. Therefore PECA tries to help their children to give them a better future.

Encouragement in Pakistan

During visits to Pakistan by Sylvester Bhatti, PECA wants to encourage their brothers and sisters there. By organising meetings, conferences and seminars with the Pakistani Christians, we encourage them through the bible and pray with them. Besides that PECA also stays in contact with the Christians in Pakistan by calling them.

 Encouragement in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands PECA helps the Pakistani asylum seekers by supporting them in their daily live and helping them in the asylum procedure. Furthermore PECA also attends international church services and contributes to that by translating.

Awareness of the situations in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands and Europe PECA works on the awareness of politicians and other people of the situation of the Pakistani Christians. By means of conversations, conferences, meetings and presentations PECA wants to get more publicity to the problems of the Pakistani Christians.

What can you do to support the Pakistani Christians or the work of PECA?

The main thing you can do is to pray for the Christians who are persecuted and for the work of PECA among these Christians.

By means of a financial donation, you can support our project so that PECA is able to keep their activities running.

Awareness, is also an important thing in which you can support PECA and the Pakistani Christians. You can organise events or presentations about the persecution of the Pakistani Christians to get the people and the politics more aware of this issue. PECA can help you set up such an event or presentation.
